Whatever you can think of, we can install for you. So if you want full privacy, semi-private, horizontal, vertical, board on board, our artistic fence professionals will do a great job of matching your fence with the properties of your home.
Picket fencing is the style most seen around front of homes, you can see completely through it, plus they are usually 3 feet tall so it is more for making your home have curb appeal as opposed to getting any sort of privacy.
Stockade This style has side-by-side boarding so it is both private and sturdy.
In contrast to the board on board (below), a stockade fence may shrink over time and leave gaps between the boards whereas the board on board has the wood placed over each other so even with shrinkage, the fence remains gap free.
Shadowbox fencing is a semi-privacy fence style. If someone is looking directly at the fence, then they can’t see through but you can see through on an angle. It also offers less wind resistance.
Board on board This style of fencing has overlapping boards which provides complete privacy.
This fence style is commonly used for ranches and farm fencing.
They are durable & versatile, they are basically the posts with the rails connected and not very private!
These fences are great for keeping pets and children away from the pool for example.
They are not very private but we can add them to a more privacy focused fence for some nice visuals.
For centuries, wood has been a popular choice for fences due to it being readily available, affordable and they are a great way to improve the look and feel of a property and, depending on the style, a wooden fence offers privacy, peace and seclusion in our hectic lives.
These are a few more reasons to opt for a wood fence:
In Texas, the heat, insects and humid conditions all cause problems for wooden fences.
It’s important to learn about the different types of wood that are great for the Texas climate and which ones might struggle.
As always, we are here to provide our professional insights and answer all your questions and help you make the right choice for what you want the fence for whether it is a picket or a privacy or for a pool or pet area.
There are two different types of wood, hardwood and softwood.
Hardwoods are the ones that lose their leaves in fall so beech, mahogany, oak and teak are the types in this category. They are usually used for decorative purposes and furniture.
The second type, softwood, is where you find the wood we use for fences. Redwood, Cedar, Pine, Spruce, Cypress. These are the trees that keep their leaves year round, are pretty tall and straight so great for building straight structures like fences with.
Softwood, evergreen trees also have natural resins which stave of termites.
The Western Red Cedar is a great wood to build a fence with and is one of the most popular (along with pine.)
It’s a colorful wood which handles extreme temperatures and the weather variations in Texas very well and the fact that cedar has fewer knots means that the wood is more structurally sound when compared to other wood types.
Cedar also has tight fibers and grain patterns which help with decay and rot resistance as the tightness of the fibers protect the wood from moisture and expanding in the Texas heat.
It doesn’t warp as much as other woods either which is important in Texas.
There are two types of cedar, the western cedar and the northern white cedar.
The western cedar is a light brown with a hint of red through it.
The northern white cedar can vary between white and yellowish in color.
Both of these will gray with age.
It has natural insect repellant so termites don’t particularly find cedar enjoyable to eat.
It is one of the more expensive options but should last a lot longer than any other wood type and Cedar also looks great so adds to curb appeal and adds to the value of your home if selling it.
12 to 20 years life expectancy (more if maintained well) and the higher end of price (ballpark price for wood fences is in the FAQ’s below.)
Redwood is a beautiful wood, is extremely strong and, if you use high quality Redwood, it is pretty resistant to rot with some reports saying that termites feed less on Redwood (as well as Cypress and Red Cedar) than other types of wood, for example, pine.
Redwood is also the prettier when comparing with pine with the naturally looking, deep red color being appealing to many people.
It’s a good idea to use lower grade Redwood for the fence panels and a higher grade for the posts. This is due to higher grade being more resistance to rot and insects like termites who live where the posts sit in the ground.
It is one of the more costly woods to use and is comparable to Red Cedar (maybe up to 15% more) so a ball park figure is in the region of $8 per picket.
The Redwood is great for humid climates like we have in Southeast Texas.
To avoid your fence going gray, treat the fence with a clear oil sealer.
Life expectancy is around the same as Cedar, 12 to 20 years but can last up to ten years longer (as with Cedar) if maintained properly but this depends on weather.
This is readily available, is more affordable and also has resins in the wood that resists rot and mildew.
However, pine does not stop termites (studies show pine is actually one of their favorites) but, if the pine is treated, this will stave off termites and carpenter ants.
7 to 12 years life expectancy if maintained properly.
Spruce is less durable than Redwood and it can warp in humid environments.
It’s also more prone to being eaten by insects than other types of wood.
It does have a natural grey hue that looks great and it is also an affordable option but, due to the above issues, we do not recommend having a fence built using Spruce in around the Beaumont area.
As it is one of the cheaper options, a spruce fence will have around 4 to 7 years life expectancy.
Pressure treated wood also starts out green and turns grey due to exposure to the elements over the months and years.
To combat the fence turning grey, you should apply a protective stain and sealant as soon as it is installed.
Wood that has been pressure treated lasts around 20 years.
Although Cypress is aesthetically pleasing, it fades to grey over time.
Cypress is a great choice if you prefer appeal over extreme durability but this type of wood is not so great in Texas weather and is not so readily available.
It is easy to paint or stain though but we would choose a different type of wood for your fence.
